This graph shows the aquifers underlying American Lake .The top layer (A) is the Vashon Aquifer with water flowing from the surrounding watershed. Underneath this is the Olympic Bed (B). It is a hardpan of finely crushed gravel sediment that acts as an impediment for lakewater draining any lower. The City of Lakewood draws all of its drinking water from aquifers.
